Commemorating Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation in Sunkani

On the solemn occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), we gathered in Sunkani, the headquarters of Adro Kola Local Government Area, to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ending this harmful practice.

FGM, also known as female circumcision or female genital cutting, is a violation of human rights and poses serious health risks to girls and women. It is our collective responsibility to raise awareness and take action to protect the rights and well-being of every girl.

Joined by esteemed stakeholders, including the Honorable Chairman of Adro Kola Local Government, and inspired students, we convened to stand in solidarity against FGM. The atmosphere was one of unity and determination as we discussed the importance of preserving the health, safety, and dignity of girls in our community.

As we observed the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, we reflected on the progress made in our fight against this harmful practice. We acknowledged the efforts of health workers, organizations such as FIDA, the National Human Rights Commission, and individuals who have tirelessly worked to raise awareness and advocate for an end to FGM in Taraba State.

It is heartening to know that Taraba State has legislation in place, the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law, to combat FGM and protect the rights of girls and women. However, our work is far from over. We must continue to educate our communities, engage stakeholders, and advocate for policies and programs that support the eradication of FGM.

As the First Lady of Taraba State, I am proud to lend my voice to this important cause. Through the Agyin Kefas Care Trust Foundation, we are committed to amplifying awareness and supporting initiatives aimed at ending FGM in our dear state.

Together, let us empower every girl with her voice and her future. Let us strive for a Taraba State where every girl can grow and thrive without fear of harm or discrimination.

Thank you to all who joined us in Sunkani to commemorate this significant day. May our collective efforts bring us closer to a future free from the scourge of FG
